Dustin Fredrick

Dustin Fredrick is a self-taught oil painter from Owen, Wisconsin, now living and working in Eau Claire. He came to painting through art history, started reading about it, and got interested in making his own.

His paintings are impressionist, painted mostly alla prima — wet paint into wet, finished in a single session. The method keeps the marks loose and immediate. His subjects range from horror films and cult classics to Wisconsin sports, especially the Brewers, and landscapes that split between rural fields and city streets.

A rural northern Wisconsin upbringing shows up in the work. He builds every canvas and frame by hand. He's been painting for about a decade and woodworking for nearly 20 years.

The work

Originals and prints

    Archival prints in 5 × 7, and 8.5 × 11 when the original is big enough, plain or framed and matted.

Commissions

Commissions are open.

Dustin paints commissions of the same kinds of things he paints anyway: a scene from a film, a favorite player, a place that matters to you, a pet, or a portrait from a photo.

  1. Send an inquiry. Say what you'd like painted and roughly how big. Reference photos help.
  2. Talk it through. Dustin replies within a few days to settle the subject, size, and price.
  3. He paints it. Then he works out with you how you'll get it.

Pricing is about $1.50 per square inch, so an 11 × 15 painting (165 square inches) runs about $250. No deposit is needed up front, and most commissions are finished within two months. Dustin will confirm the price and timing with you before he starts.

Helpful to include in your inquiry:

  • What you'd like painted, in as much detail as you like
  • Reference photos, if you have them
  • A size, if you have one in mind (11 × 15 is a common one), or ask Dustin to suggest one
  • Anything else worth knowing: a deadline, framing, or that it's a gift
